On Christmas Day like all good Jews we went to the movies...
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol: Silly Fun. I couldn't remember the plot if I tried - but I enjoyed myself. However Tom Cruise is getting to old for this stuff! I am glad Josh Hollaway found some post "Lost" work.

We were lucky - we were also off on Monday! So off we went to the movies again!
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo:
The Swedish version was better. American version was just ok. Rape was very graphic - do not take children or even teenagers. My favorite part was Christopher Plummer - still a great actor (but I did think he would start singing a song from The Sound of Music). Daniel Craig was ok - nothing to blog about. (it was funny seeing Nyqvist yesterday in Mission Impossible) Rooney Mara did well as Lisbeth - but still not as good as Noomi Rapace.

In Time - by accident posted on Mkey on DVD instead of here!
In time was an ok thriller. It's hard to imagine Justin Timberlake as a serious actor, but he did ok. The premise was original, which is always surprising, but they needed to flesh out the storyline more. If you are into action films, and there is nothing else available it was entertaining, but no classic.

As the dvdduesday guy from G4 (Chris Gore) would say - its a rent not a buy :)

Sarah's Key
MKey and Key Jr had no desire to see a Holocaust film, so I was happy that Shouweet agreed to come with me (ideal would have been everyone together). I had already read the phenomenal book - she hadn't.
Sarah's Key was great. It was very powerful. The acting was superb. No, it was not a fun movie, what Holocaust film is, but it left you thinking and will stay with you for long after you exit the theater. The book, however, was better. The movie did not flesh out the characters as thoroughly as the book did. Shouweet did not understand some of the character's motivations, which I was able to explain having read the book.
This is not a movie for the lighthearted, or if you are looking for some light feel good entertainment, but is well worth the time. Also you have to be adept at reading subtitles. Most, but not all, of the movie is in French. I wouldn't take young children. I would recommend this movie for a Holocaust study class.

Annoyance of jumping back and forth between current and the past - 7 annoyance keys out of 10

Real Steel a/k/a Rockin' Sockin' Robots the Movie
In the spirit of the First Rocky and The Champ, Real Steel has Real Heart!
Hugh Jackman in a total break from his usual roles, plays the estranged father of an adorable boy who fights his way back to the top. He was a former boxer, who now (in the future) fights robots instead.
The robot action is awesome - the CGI great and the acting fantastic! The first half of the story is on the slow side, but the second half had the audience cheering for ATOM the Rockin' Sockin' Robot!
This movie is very kid friendly - no sex or foul language (that I remember), but also fun for adults. It was a 3 tissue affair! Real Steel is a feel good movie the perfect antidote for the daily blues. I highly recommend it!

Note: I actually watched this movie before Footloose, handwrote my entry, but did not have a chance to type it until now.

Footloose
I really enjoyed the Footloose remake. I re-watched (for the upteenth time) the original Footloose on Saturday night and then watched the reboot on Sunday.
Now to compare....
The original Footloose they hired actors and dubbed in the dancing, for the reboot they hired dancers who wanted to act.
Kenny Wormald is no Kevin Bacon. Kevin had a magic about him in the original. Bacon is not pretty, but he made you believe in him. You rooted for him to get the girl. Wormald was fine. His dancing was great, but his acting was just fine. He is handsome (way more than Bacon) and you were rooting for him, but not in the same way you did for Bacon. Wormald 7 keys out of 10, Bacon 9.5 keys out of 10
Julianne Hough was amazing. She danced, she acted, she had a sparkle in her eyes. Far superior to Lori Singer. You rooted for her and her red cowboy boots! She will go far as an actress! Hough 9 keys out of 10 Singer 8 keys out of 10
Dennis Quaid was no John Lithgow - he did not breath fire and brimstone - the requirments for the preacher part! He was adequate. Quaid 6 keys out of 10 Lithgow 9 keys out of 10
Miles Teller did Willard justice! Everytime I see Footloose, the part where Ren is teaching Willard to dance reminds me of my roomates in college teaching me! Teller was just as amazing as Christopher Penn. Teller 9 keys out of 10 Penn 9.5 keys out of 10
Interesting move giving the very young Sarah Jessica Parker part to Ziah Colon. I liked the fact that Rusty hit the redneck over the head with the bottle, and did not leave all the fighting to Willard. Parker 10 keys out of 10 for energy 9 keys out of 10 over all. Colon 7 keys out of 10
I really enjoyed comparing the two movies, what they left out, the changes that they made. The main omission is that the new version leaves out the book burning scene.
Who should see it: Any nostalgic fan of the original and Teenagers (very teenager friendly), older people may not like the new music.
So what is the verdict?

Acting - Original - 9 keys out of 10, Remake 7.5 keys out of 10

Contagion - so/so
Mkey and I went to Contagion yesterday. It was disappointing. I expected more of a seat of your pants thriller, I found it to be more of a thinking (intellectual) movie. Mkey felt that it was like a documentary. This movie is not for children.
If you are a germ-a-phob (like Monk) this is the movie for you. Conspiracy theorist will also enjoy it. If you are expecting a fun thriller - you will be Disappointed.
Acting 7.5 keys out of 10

Today's Movies: The Debt and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part II
Labor Day Weekend - Perfect for the Movies! After last week's Hurricane we all needed a rest :)
This morning we watched The Debt.
I really enjoyed this movie. It was an edge of your seat suspense thriller. My son called it "powerful." My heart was racing the entire time. I would recommend this movie to a older crowd. This is not a child friendly film. You need to enjoy having your heart race! Helen Mirren was great but Jessica Chastain as her younger self actually had more screen time, and should be considered the lead not Mirren. Sam Worthington was great (which proves that if Avatar had a decent storyline the acting could have been as good as the special effects). I am going to try to buy a copy of the Hebrew original movie Ha-Hov, to compare.

In the evening I finally took my son to Harry Potter. We have been holding it over his head till he finished his summer reading! Now I must admit I did not see Deathly Hollows part 1, I also did not read the book.
I found Harry Potter intensely boring. I fought to stay awake the entire movie. The first Harry Potter was the only movie I really enjoyed. The first movie had a sweetness about the little kids, this movie was dark and depressing. I would not let young children see it. I would have had nightmares as a kid. They had to have Ron and Harry take off their shirts - just to show they were grown up. If you like Harry Potter - then by all means you should see the conclusion, but if you are not a fan - skip this one.
Special Effects - 7 out of 10 keys
Acting - 5 out of 10 keys
Storyline - 3 out of 10 keys

Welcome to my blog: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Welcome to my blog! I always review my movies for my friends - and they convinced me to start a blog!
I am JKey a happily married, middle aged Mom of a 16 1/2 year old Aspie. We love the movies and own over 2800 dvds (my husband's collection). My reviews will be different - I rank movies on what their purpose was. For example I enjoyed Bad Teacher - it was fun - but it is obviously not Oscar worthy!
We just came back from Planet of the Apes:
Fun factor: 9 out of 10 KEYS
Action: 9 out of 10 KEYS
Drama: 8 out of 10 KEYS
Acting: 8 out of 10 KEYS for humans! (Apes rate a 10 - I want them to like me!)
Oscar Worthy: 5 out of 10 KEYS
Interested in seeing sequel: 9 out of 10 KEYS
Overall: 8 out of 10 KEYS
Who should see this movie: if who like:
Action movies
Apes
James Franco
Who should not see this movie:
Individuals who like serious movies a/k/a Oscar contenders
What I liked about this movie: In the beginning I enjoyed the drama, and when the apes escaped the action was fun!
See you again when the KEYS again go to the movies!
